Full-Time Coach and Operations Assistant

The Renton Rowing Center (RRC) is seeking a full-time Coach & Operations Assistant to oversee the growth and success of our rowing programs. RRC is one of the fastest growing clubs in the Northwest region, and recently qualified and raced our first entry at the US Youth National Championships last year. We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, and organized individual to join our team to help us continue to make rowing a more diverse, accessible, and inclusive sport.

 

This full-time position is responsible for the quality, growth, and pipeline development of rowing programs and the rentals business here at RRC, with a particular focus on Middle School and adult programs. This position is an exciting opportunity to develop new avenues of outreach into our community, invest more staff time into the recruitment and onboarding of new athletes, and grow our Middle School programs. Reporting to the Renton Rowing Center Executive Director (ED) and the Head Coach (HC), the Coach & Operations Assistant will grow with and within RRC. The Coach & Operations Assistant is a thoughtful, innovative, and proactive leader who helps to bring out the best of our community and strives for excellence.

 

This position also serves the role of Rowing Coach, in which you will design and implement training plans for the Middle School program, provide coaching and member assistance to adult rowers, coordinate with the Head Coach and additional coaching staff, and build and maintain relationships with rowers, youth families, and alumni. You will work closely with the Executive Director, Head Coach, and other employees and volunteers to ensure you have the resources and support you need to be successful in this role.

 

The ideal Coach & Operations Assistant builds positive, inclusive teams and:

6. Commits to a welcoming boathouse. This person takes active steps towards creating and cultivating a culture across all RRC programs that is inclusive and representative of the diversity we see reflected in the Renton community at-large;

7. Sets process and outcome-oriented goals for the short and long term vision of their programs;

8. Effectively communicates and collaborates with other staff, volunteers, and stakeholders;

9. Identifies issues or inefficiencies quickly and finds creative solutions;

10. Is open-minded to their own professional areas of growth and is receptive to constructive feedback, and adapts whenever necessary.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Head Coach of the RRC Middle School Program, with an emphasis on building a sculling-focused team driven by core values of inclusivity, consistency, and personal accountability.

  • Coordinate with the Youth Head Coach to ensure optimal communication between youth programs and develop a supportive pipeline from Middle School to High School

  • Coach our growing adult programs, primarily focusing on the Learn to Row and Intermediate levels.

  • Create and implement training plans that lay the foundation for success for all athletes, from Middle School to our competitive Masters.

  • Assists rentals staff with equipment management, client relations, and intra-program coordination. Ensure that programs are running smoothly and dedicating additional time every week towards creative methods of advertising, promotion, and outreach.

  • Work closely with the Head Coach and Executive Director and coaching staff to create short and long term goals that are attainable, ambitious, and in line with our mission.

  • Assist regatta day operations and equipment scheduling.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants in the rowing program. Comply with required safety policies and procedures.

  • Build positive and professional relationships with athletes, parents, staff, and other community members.

  • Be an advocate for all athletes, particularly participants who face socioeconomic barriers to entry or continuation in our sport.

  • Act as a positive representative of the RRC and its mission by promoting our programs, engaging with community members, and collaborating with other teams and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:  

● Coaching and/or boathouse managerial experience that demonstrates ability to fill the roles and responsibilities of the position;

● Competitive rowing experience strongly preferred;

● Experience working with young students or athletes;

● Experience and comfort working in a multicultural environment;

● Ability to maintain valid CPR/First Aid/AED, SafeSport, and other required certifications;

● Must satisfactorily complete a background check.

 

Personal Attributes:  

● Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to  interactions. The Coach & Operations Assistant will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with all cultures; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people who have different cultural frameworks.

● Prior experience working with a diverse population and demonstrated equity and inclusion mindset. This person  should be aware of their own identity and biases, identify and overcome others’ biases; the Coach & Operations Assistant actively works to create an inclusive environment.

● Is team oriented, with a strong work ethic; is a listener with excellent communication skills and a passion for serving under-resourced youth and adults.

● Is a dynamic and creative thinker; is able to thoughtfully develop solutions and also adapt their strategies when the desired outcomes aren’t achieved. This person has a good sense of safety and systematic efficiency, while still demonstrating a willingness to try new approaches and seek out solutions to repetitive problems.
